CannonKeys' beginner aluminum 65% with an O-ring mount and included parts

A 65% aluminum kit with an O-ring gasket mount, FR4 plate, hot-swap PCB and clip-in stabilizers in the box. Tom's Hardware called it beginner-friendly and easy to build; it noted finish imperfections, less flex than the Bakeneko60 and clip-in-only stabilizers.

65% kit Polycarbonate Gasket Hot-swap QMK/VIA

Our take, based on research

A beginner-friendly aluminum 65% that Tom's Hardware recommends for newcomers. It is simple and limited, so pick it for ease rather than depth.

Overview

The Bakeneko65 is CannonKeys' entry-level custom kit. CannonKeys lists a cast aluminum case, an O-ring gasket mount, an FR4 universal plate, a QMK/VIA-compatible hot-swap PCB, a 6° typing angle, about 590 g unbuilt, an internal removable silicone dampener, a zinc weight option, a carrying case, and clip-in stabilizers in the box. Switches and keycaps are not included. Tom's Hardware called it beginner-friendly and said it offers more keys but less bounce than the Bakeneko60. It praised the simple, screw-free assembly, included stabilizers and improved powder-coated finish, and was impressed by the acoustics given the lack of sound-dampening foam. It noted a PCB without flex cuts and warm-white-only backlighting, said the silicone weight dampened hollowness while the zinc weight likely sounds sharper, and listed its reasons to avoid: imperfections in the finish, less flex than the Bakeneko60 and support only for clip-in stabilizers. It recommended lubing the switches and stabilizers. The O-ring can be swapped for softer or firmer rubber to change the feel. It is an easy, low-fuss first custom kit, but not for experienced builders who want more flexibility.
