Mode's 65% kit with hardwood accents and the Crown mounting system

A wired 65% kit with an aluminum body, walnut, maple or white oak accents, a Crown wave-spring mount, QMK/VIA and a choice of plates. alexotos, whose copy came from a sponsor and whose links are affiliate links, found the Crown mount cushioned and the sound clean; the board is a kit you finish with your own switches and keycaps.

65% kit Crown mount Aluminum Wood accent Hot-swap or solder QMK/VIA

Our take, based on research

A design-led premium kit whose main selling point is the new Crown mount, which alexotos found impressive. Evidence is limited to one disclosed review and Mode's own materials.

Overview

The Encore is Mode Designs' 65% kit, redesigned in 2026 around the Crown Mounting System. Mode's page describes a split top case with a cherry-style front lip in natural hardwood (walnut, maple or white oak) paired with anodized aluminum, plates in POM, aluminum, carbon fiber or copper, a hot-swap or solder PCB with QMK/VIA, a wired USB-C connection, a 5.5° typing angle, and a 326 by 125 mm footprint. The Crown mount joins plate and PCB to the case at eight points with a wave spring, silicone spool and bushing. Switches, keycaps and stabilizers are not included. alexotos, who was sent the board by a sponsor and uses affiliate links, called the Crown system impressive and easy to install. It described a well-isolated top-mount feel that leans stiffer, a clean sound closer to top mount than the earlier lattice blocks, a built weight of 1.22 kg, Gateron sockets, no ISO on the hot-swap PCB, and top-mount hardware as a separate purchase. It preferred the Crown system's cushion to the stiffer top mount, though it liked the softer feel of the old lattice blocks slightly more. PC Gamer's coverage was an announcement of the refresh, quoting Mode's claim of its most satisfying typing experience to date rather than testing the board. Mode's own page says the kit needs assembly. It is a premium, design-led 65% for builders who want a distinctive soft mount.
