SteelSeries' TKL with adjustable Hall-effect switches and an OLED screen

Our take, based on research

A well-liked analog TKL for competitive players, praised for its switches and feel. The OLED, scroll wheel and fixed switches draw complaints, so it suits tuners more than tinkerers.

Overview

The Apex Pro TKL Gen 3 is SteelSeries' tenkeyless board built around OmniPoint 3.0 Hall-effect switches. SteelSeries says their actuation can be adjusted from 0.1 mm to 4.0 mm and lists Rapid Trigger, double-shot PBT keycaps, a detachable braided USB-C cable, triple-layer sound-dampening foam, per-key lubrication and an OLED Smart Screen for changing settings on the fly. A wireless TKL version also exists. TechRadar praised the analog switches and durable build, and found the GG software's tweaks good, with actuation changeable globally or per key and two binds per key at different depths. Its gripes were the lack of controller emulation, GG giving no visual feedback when adjusting, and a short, flat wrist rest. PC Gamer called the typing feel immaculate, with a muted thock, and described an aluminum top with a plastic back that weighs under a kilogram, though it said the price, the lack of a wireless mode and the lack of USB passthrough made a poor first impression, and it concluded that the board earns its price with its switches, customization and feel. PCMag called the switches snappy and the acoustics muted, but heard a hollow response and a rattly spacebar, found the OLED easier to use through software, and criticized the fixed-switch design. Laptop Mag liked the features but called the recessed scroll wheel uncomfortable and the OLED cramped. The board suits competitive players who want to tune actuation per key, rather than typists wanting a hot-swap board.
