The Gem 96%

The 98-key Gem: a tri-mode aluminum compact full-size with gasket mount, VIA and an 8,000 mAh battery, without the Mineral 02's curved case and back weight.

96% VIA Quick release

Our take, based on research

The simpler, cheaper way into the Mineral platform with a numpad. Evidence is the maker and Akko's own guide.

Overview

Gem 02 is the 1800-compact (98-key) version of the Gem line. MonsGeek and Akko list a CNC aluminum case, gasket mount, ball-catch rapid disassembly, Cherry-profile double-shot PBT keycaps, a translucent acrylic corner with synchronized RGB, tri-mode connectivity (Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4GHz, USB-C), an 8,000 mAh battery, 5-pin hot-swap sockets and VIA with source code. Akko describes it as the more affordable alternative to the Mineral 02, for people who value productivity and prefer a simpler design.

Akko's series guide says the Mineral and Gem models share the same mechanical base and performance. The Gem leaves out the curved CNC case and the PVD back weight that define the Mineral. No independent review of Gem 02 was found.

Among MonsGeek's numpad boards it is the VIA, tri-mode option that sits next to the M2 V5 VIA, which has a different case design and a piano-key styling.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • Aluminum 98-key case with gasket mount and ball-catch disassembly
  • Tri-mode with an 8,000 mAh battery and VIA
  • 5-pin hot-swap sockets
  • Same internals as the Mineral 02 in a simpler case (Akko)
  • Cherry-profile double-shot PBT keycaps (maker's spec)
What Could Be Better
  • No independent review found
  • No curved frame or back weight, so it feels like a plainer Mineral 02
  • Overlaps with the M2 V5 VIA at a similar spec
  • Translucent corner lighting is a style choice
  • Numpad layout makes it wider than a 75%
