96% Gasket Tri-mode VIA Aluminum

Our take, based on research

A compact, heavy, metal full-size for typing, with one favorable independent review. Choose the HE version if you want Rapid Trigger.

Overview

The M2 V5 VIA is the numpad option in MonsGeek's V5 aluminum line: a 98-key ("1800 compact") CNC aluminum case with a gasket mount, ball-catch quick-release, Poron plate foam, IXPE switch pads, 3 mm case foam with a PET layer, pre-lubed plate-mounted stabilizers, 5-pin hot-swap sockets, tri-mode connectivity and an 8,000 mAh battery. Remapping and lighting run through VIA; MonsGeek's driver does not support this edition. The assembled version is dressed in black and white with six piano-themed novelty keys.

Vortex Gaming's review reports a weight of about 2.1 kg, a metal-block feel with an elegant sound, and good sound absorption, with high-quality double-shot keycaps and a milky plate that diffuses the LEDs. It listed the Stellar Rose switch at 37 gf and 3.8 mm and the Green Fog at 60 gf and 3.6 mm. Its summary highlights the typing feel, ease of maintenance and VIA customization, in a market with few numpad options.

It is the one to look at if you want a full set of keys with a numpad in a short case. The M2 V5 HE is the magnetic version.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • 98 keys with a numpad in a shortened aluminum case
  • Gasket mount with multiple foam layers and pre-lubed stabilizers (maker)
  • Tri-mode with an 8,000 mAh battery and VIA remapping
  • Vortex Gaming praised the typing feel, sound and easy maintenance
  • Tool-free ball-catch case access
What Could Be Better
  • About 2.1 kg (Vortex Gaming), so it stays on the desk
  • Barebone: switches and keycaps are separate
  • VIA edition does not use MonsGeek's driver
  • Only one independent review found, and it is a short summary-style write-up
  • Reviewer coverage is thin: just one short, summary-style write-up was found
