Full size Aluminum Gasket Hot-swap

Our take, based on research

A solid but discontinued full-size kit. If you want a numpad board you can buy now, MonsGeek points to the M2 V5 VIA or the Mineral 02 VIA.

Overview

The M5 is MonsGeek's wired full-size aluminum kit: 108 keys, a south-facing hot-swap PCB, gasket mount, QMK/VIA and a weight of about 2.45 kg for the barebone. MonsGeek's own page now carries a notice that the model is discontinued and out of stock and points to the M2 V5 VIA (98 keys) or the Mineral 02 VIA as replacements.

No standalone review of the wired M5 was found. A forum review of the wireless M5W describes the shared platform: a very heavy aluminum build, a harsher bottom-out than a Topre keyboard, an acrylic plate with south-facing sockets, pre-lubed clip-in stabilizers and extra screw-in ones. Treat that as indicative of the family rather than as a review of this version.

Because it is discontinued, it is mainly a used-market or remaining-stock consideration. The M5W is the wireless variant, and the M2 V5 VIA is the current wired-or-wireless replacement.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • Full 108-key layout in a CNC aluminum case
  • QMK/VIA firmware on this version
  • Gasket mount and 5-pin hot-swap sockets
  • Around 2.45 kg barebone (maker), very stable on a desk
  • Wired, so no battery or dongle to manage
What Could Be Better
  • MonsGeek lists it as discontinued and out of stock
  • Wired only
  • Barebone: switches and keycaps are separate
  • No independent review of this version found
  • Very heavy for a keyboard
