Our take, based on research

The most balanced K8 for most buyers, reviewed positively by MakeUseOf.

Overview

The K8 Max adds a USB dongle to the 80% K8 platform. Keychron lists 2.4 GHz plus Bluetooth for up to three devices plus wired, 1000 Hz polling, hot-swappable Keychron Super switches (Red, Brown or Banana), a case in ABS or with an aluminum frame, double-shot PBT keycaps, 22 RGB effects and a 4000 mAh battery rated up to 190 hours. Keychron's spec line gives 1158 g.

MakeUseOf rated it 9 out of 10: superb quality for the price, a thocky sound on the brown switches, deep hardware and software customization, a heavy body that stays put, and keycaps that help avoid mis-presses. Its listed limits were the plastic base for advanced enthusiasts, shallow RGB customization, and adjustable feet that could be larger. It quoted 190 hours with the backlight off and about 100 hours with the backlight low.

It is the K8 to get if you want a dongle and QMK without paying for Hall-effect switches.

Versions: this page also covers the original K8 and the K8 Pro, which share the 80% layout and the ABS or aluminum-frame body. Per Keychron's pages, both are Bluetooth 5.1 and wired only, with no 2.4 GHz dongle. The original K8 has no QMK/VIA, Gateron G Pro switches (Keychron Super or optical on its hot-swappable versions), OEM double-shot ABS keycaps and a battery rated up to 68 hours. The K8 Pro adds QMK/VIA, Gateron G Pro or Keychron K Pro switches and double-shot PBT keycaps, with a battery rated up to 260 hours with the backlight off. The K8 Max moves to Keychron Super switches and adds the dongle; its aluminum-frame version measures 359.20 x 129.20 mm and weighs 1308 g. The K8 HE, with magnetic switches, has its own page.
