Akko's full-size tri-mode hot-swap board in themed editions

A full-size, hot-swappable tri-mode board with PBT dye-sub keycaps, an ABS frame and a 3,000 mAh battery. The only review read, from SmartZone, liked its flexibility and smooth lubed switches and found battery life modest.

Our take, based on research

A flexible full-size wireless board with hot-swap and decent software, but evidence is thin and battery is modest. Confirm the edition and switch before buying.

Overview

The 5108B Plus is Akko's full-size wireless board, sold in many themed editions. Akko's pages list tri-mode connections (Bluetooth 5.0 on the Global page, 5.1 on the EU page), 2.4 GHz and wired USB-C, 1,000 Hz polling in wired and 2.4 GHz modes and 125 Hz over Bluetooth, hot-swap sockets, RGB backlighting, PBT keycaps (dye-sub on the Global page, double-shot legends on the EU page) and an ABS frame. Only the Akko EU page lists the weight (about 1.2 kg), the dimensions (442 by 132 by 41 mm), a tray-mount structure and plate-mount stabilizers; the Global page has no spec table. The single independent review found is SmartZone's German test (SmartZone says it may earn commissions from retailer links) of a version with Creamy Yellow switches. It liked the board's flexibility and the smooth, lubricated feel and moderate noise, saw the software install quickly and detect the layout, and found 2.4 GHz the best compromise of latency and polling, with Bluetooth only suited to office work. It noted the lighting fills the gaps between keys rather than lighting each key, the 1.2 kg frame feels valuable but is less portable, and the 3,000 mAh battery is small: it estimated 40 to 60 hours of use and needed two charges in six weeks. The Akko EU page lists the battery as N/A, so the 3,000 mAh figure comes from the review. Switch options differ by edition. It suits shoppers who want a wireless full-size with hot-swap at a modest cost and accept shorter battery life.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • Tri-mode with Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4 GHz and wired USB-C (Akko)
  • Hot-swap sockets across the board (Akko, SmartZone)
  • PBT dye-sub keycaps (Akko)
  • SmartZone found the lubed Creamy Yellow switches smooth and not too loud
  • Software installs quickly and detects the layout (SmartZone)
  • 1,000 Hz polling over wired and 2.4 GHz (Akko)
What Could Be Better
  • 3,000 mAh battery is small; SmartZone estimated 40 to 60 hours
  • Bluetooth polls at 125 Hz, so SmartZone suggests it for office use only
  • Backlight lights the gaps between keys rather than each key (SmartZone)
  • Heavy at about 1.2 kg and less portable (SmartZone)
  • Plastic ABS frame (Akko, SmartZone)
  • Only one review of this model was found, so evidence is thin
