Keychron V5

Released 2022

Researched from maker specs and published sources. Last checked Oct 18, 2026.

Wired 96% with a numpad, knob and tray-mounted plastic case

A wired 96% with a knob, hot-swap sockets and QMK. An owner who set up macros found it capable but noted missing PgUp, PgDn and menu keys, and bright south-facing LEDs.

96% layout Wired Hot-swap QMK/VIA Knob

Our take, based on research

A capable wired 96% for QMK and macro use, with the usual 96% compromises on page and menu keys. It has been replaced by the V5 8K, V5 Max and V5 Ultra 8K, so check what is actually in stock.

Overview

The V5 is the 96% model in the original V line, launched in October 2022 (per Greenkeys). Keychron's spec page lists a plastic case on a tray mount, hot-swap sockets, K Pro switches, double-shot OSA PBT keycaps, QMK with the Launcher web app, and a rotary knob. Both ANSI and ISO versions were sold. It is wired only.

Peter Mortensen's write-up focuses on QMK and macros. He found the V5 fully capable of macros, including mouse actions, once he moved from VIA to proper QMK, but pointed out that there is no easy way to cancel a macro in progress. He is critical of the 96% layout: the numpad squeezes out dedicated PgUp, PgDn and context-menu keys, which he remapped onto numpad keys. He also found the south-facing LEDs bleed bright light toward the typist, so he had to turn the brightness down. He measured the board at about 1.34 kg, and noted 22 lighting modes in firmware version 1.1 and the usual hot-swap sockets.

testberichte.de, which summarizes 24 Amazon.de owner opinions, lists the typing feel and build as strengths and keycap quality as a common complaint; treat that as an aggregate, not a test. The V5 8K and V5 Ultra 8K are Keychron's later versions of this layout.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • Compact 96% footprint with a numpad, arrows and a rotary knob
  • Hot-swap sockets for 3-pin and 5-pin switches
  • QMK with the Launcher web app; an owner got macros with mouse actions working in QMK (Mortensen)
  • South-facing per-key RGB with 22 modes in the v1.1 firmware (Mortensen)
  • Both ANSI and ISO layouts were sold (Keychron)
  • About 1.34 kg in Mortensen's measurement, so it stays put on the desk
What Could Be Better
  • Wired only
  • The 96% numpad squeezes out dedicated PgUp, PgDn and context-menu keys (Mortensen)
  • South-facing LEDs bleed bright light toward the typist at higher brightness (Mortensen)
  • Owners on Amazon.de criticized the keycap quality (via testberichte.de summary)
  • No easy way to cancel a running QMK macro (Mortensen)

Who Is This For?
