Wired 60% with a steel plate and tray mount

A wired 60% in ABS plastic with a steel plate, tray mount, hot-swap sockets and QMK. Expert Reviews found the build superb and the feel accurate; the tall profile and missing arrows are the trade-offs.

60% layout Wired Hot-swap QMK/VIA

Our take, based on research

A compact, solid wired 60% that reviewers rate for build and typing accuracy. It is plain and a bit tall, and it assumes you are happy living on layers. For wireless, step up to the V4 Max.

Overview

The V4 is the 60% member of the original V line. Keychron's spec page lists an ABS plastic case with a tray mount and steel plate, hot-swap sockets for 3-pin and 5-pin switches, screw-in PCB stabilizers, south-facing RGB, Keychron K Pro switches and double-shot OSA PBT keycaps. It is wired (USB-C, 1000Hz) and runs QMK with the Launcher web app. Keychron lists 730 g and 303.85 x 117.09 mm, with flip-out feet for three angles.

Expert Reviews used the V4 as its test board for the V Series and called the build superb. It described a solid sandwich of ABS top and bottom case, a very stiff steel plate and a silicone pad, and linked that stiffness to an accurate typing action. It liked the OSA keycap shape and the VIA and Vial support (five layers, with 22 effects in VIA) and called the V4 an outstanding affordable mechanical keyboard. Its reservations were the high profile, with the bottom row sitting about 4 mm higher than on its Cherry G80, and the lack of a wrist rest.

One owner's blog (Thomas' Notes) chose the V4 for the 60% layout and found the stock K Pro Brown switches tactile but not quiet, so he replaced them. He found remapping in VIA easier than compiling QMK firmware, though he could not find a way to customize the RGB lighting in VIA. A 60% board has no dedicated arrow or function keys, so anything beyond the letters sits on a layer.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • Stiff steel plate and tray mount give an accurate, solid feel; Expert Reviews called the build superb
  • Hot-swap sockets for 3-pin and 5-pin switches
  • Screw-in PCB stabilizers
  • QMK with the Launcher web app, and VIA or Vial support (Expert Reviews)
  • OSA double-shot PBT keycaps, which Expert Reviews liked
  • 730 g (Keychron's figure) and 303.85 mm wide, so it is compact
  • Three typing angles from the flip-out feet
What Could Be Better
  • Wired only; Keychron's wireless 60% is the V4 Max
  • 60% layout with no dedicated arrows or function row, so the Fn layer matters
  • The V line sits high off the desk and Keychron does not supply a wrist rest (Expert Reviews)
  • Stock K Pro Brown switches are tactile but not quiet (Thomas' Notes)
  • Rich VIA lighting control was not available in an owner's VIA setup (Thomas' Notes)
