Compact 80% magnetic Q for typing and gaming

A 1.8 kg aluminum 80% TKL with Gateron magnetic Nebula switches, Rapid Trigger, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth. Tom's Guide and AppleInsider like it; price and a single switch choice hold it back.

TKL layout Tri-mode Hot-swap QMK/VIA Knob Hall effect

Our take, based on research

A capable Hall effect TKL that both reviewers recommend, with price and a single switch family as the main caveats. A good fit if you value the layout and Rapid Trigger.

Overview

The Q3 HE puts Keychron's Hall effect switches into the tenkeyless Q. Keychron lists Gateron Double-Rail Magnetic Nebula switches with Rapid Trigger, 0.2 to 3.8 mm adjustable actuation and Dynamic Keystrokes, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth with 1000 Hz polling, an aluminum gasket-mounted case with a knob, OSA double-shot PBT keycaps, a 4000 mAh battery rated up to 100 hours and 1,775 g. It only accepts the Gateron Double-Rail magnetic switch.

Tom's Guide recommended it as one of the best boards for gaming and productivity, citing Rapid Trigger, Snap Tap and a solid all-metal build, but listing expense, 1000 Hz-only polling and limited switch choice as cons. AppleInsider scored it 4.5 out of 5, praising quiet tactile-feeling keys, high build quality, a small footprint and software customization, and noting the high entry price and limited case colors. AppleInsider also said Keychron's Launcher now works smoothly on Mac and several browsers.

If you want 8 kHz, the wired Q3 HE 8K exists at Keychron, but it is not covered by this entry.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • Rapid Trigger, Snap Tap and adjustable actuation (Tom's Guide, Keychron)
  • Solid all-metal build; AppleInsider was struck by the weight
  • 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, 1000 Hz polling
  • Keychron Launcher works on Mac and several browsers (AppleInsider)
  • Small footprint for a board with a full arrow cluster and function row
What Could Be Better
  • Expensive (Tom's Guide, AppleInsider)
  • Only Gateron Double-Rail magnetic switches fit, so choice is limited
  • 1000 Hz ceiling; Tom's Guide marked this down for a gaming board
  • Only two case colors (AppleInsider)
  • Battery is rated up to 100 hours, well below the mechanical Max models
