Southpaw 96% magnetic Q for left-handed gamers

A 2.2 kg left-hand-numpad 96% aluminum Q with Gateron magnetic switches, Rapid Trigger, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth. Digital Chumps calls it one of the best prebuilts for left-handed players.

96% layout Tri-mode Hot-swap QMK/VIA Knob Hall effect

Our take, based on research

A distinctive board for left-handed users that two reviewers liked. Check the hot-swap point, because sources disagree, and expect to pay for the Hall effect parts.

Overview

The Q12 HE is the southpaw 96% Q with Hall effect switches. Keychron lists Gateron Double-Rail Magnetic Nebula switches, Rapid Trigger, 0.2 to 3.8 mm actuation, 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and wired USB-C at 1000 Hz, an aluminum gasket-mounted case with a knob, OSA double-shot PBT keycaps, a 4000 mAh battery rated up to 100 hours, 145.2 x 409.4 mm and 2,201 g.

Digital Chumps called it one of the best prebuilt keyboards for left-handed players, noting that anyone else may struggle with it, and praised build, acoustics and software support. It described a soft, clacky sound from the foam, latex pad and PET film, and sturdy Nebula switches with virtually no wobble. PC Guide's review lists adjustable actuation, durable PBT keycaps, macros, SOCD, Dynamic Keystrokes and Rapid Trigger as strengths, and no height adjustment, cheap-looking keycap fonts, no shine-through legends, a high price and weight as weaknesses.

One discrepancy to check before buying: Keychron's page lists hot-swappable switches, whereas PC Guide says the Q12 HE comes only fully assembled with non-swappable Hall effect switches.

Pros & Cons

Strengths

  • Adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger, SOCD and Dynamic Keystrokes (PC Guide)
  • Soft, clacky sound with sturdy, wobble-free switches (Digital Chumps)
  • Durable PBT double-shot keycaps (PC Guide)

What Could Be Better

  • No height adjustment (PC Guide)
  • Keycap font looks a bit cheap and legends do not shine through (PC Guide)
  • Heavy weight makes it less portable (PC Guide)
