Wired 75% aluminum Q with a steel plate

The version 2 wired Q1: a 1.8 kg CNC aluminum 75% with a steel plate, gasket mount, QMK/VIA and a knob. No Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz.

75% layout Wired Hot-swap QMK/VIA Knob

Our take, based on research

A solid, cable-only entry to the Q1 platform. Reviews of the original Q1 liked the build, the even gasket sound, the screw-in stabilizers and QMK/VIA, and flagged ping, loudness and easy scratching. Choose it if wireless is not needed; otherwise look at the Q1 Max or a newer Q1.

Overview

This is the wired, no-battery Q1 that Keychron lists as version 2: a full CNC aluminum 75% with a steel plate, gasket mount, hot-swap sockets, south-facing RGB and a knob, running QMK with the Keychron Launcher web app. Fully assembled it ships with Gateron G Pro switches and double-shot PBT keycaps, and Keychron lists 1,825 g. Keychron's own page now points buyers to the Q1 HE 8K and Q1 Ultra 8K as the newer Q1 models.

Tom's Hardware reviewed the original Q1, and the points that matter for this board carry over: the gasket mount gave a similar sound whichever key was pressed, the screw-in stabilizers rattled far less than the plate-mounted ones on most keyboards, and QMK/VIA support was a highlight. The same review listed three drawbacks: the top plate scratches easily when swapping switches, it is louder than expected, and it is heavy. iMore also described a slight metallic ping on the first Q1 that the double-gasket Q2 fixed, so expect to do some tuning if sound matters to you.

It is cable-only, so it suits a desk that stays put. If you want Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz in the same 75% shape, the Q1 Max is the nearest step up on Keychron's own range.

Pros & Cons

Strengths
  • CNC aluminum case with gasket mount; Keychron lists 1,825 g assembled, so it stays put
  • Steel plate and QMK/VIA firmware, with the Keychron Launcher web app for remapping and macros
  • Hot-swap sockets for 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches
  • Tom's Hardware found the gasket mount gave a similar sound from key to key
  • Screw-in stabilizers, which Tom's Hardware said rattle far less than plate-mounted ones
  • Knob and both Mac and Windows keycaps are included on the assembled version (Keychron)
What Could Be Better
  • Wired only: no Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz on this model
  • Tom's Hardware found the original Q1 louder than expected, and iMore heard a slight metallic ping on it
  • The top plate scratches easily when switches are swapped (Tom's Hardware)
  • Heavy for a 75%, so not a travel board
  • Keychron now lists newer Q1 HE 8K and Q1 Ultra 8K versions
